I joined a weekly Mandarin meetup and realized my textbook small talk runs out after about three minutes. I can introduce myself, ask about hometowns, and talk about food, but then the conversation starts to feel like an interview. Most people are patient, yet I want to sound more natural and make the exchange less one-sided.
What topics or phrases have helped you keep a casual conversation moving without jumping into politics or personal salary questions? I am around lower-intermediate level: comfortable with daily life vocabulary, still slow with abstract opinions, and much better when I can prepare a few flexible sentence patterns before I go.
