First weekend in Shanghai: stay in Jing'an or near the Bund?

I will have just two full days in Shanghai on my first trip to China and I am overthinking hotel location. My priority is easy metro access, good food within walking distance, and not wasting half the trip crossing the city.

For a short first visit, would you stay around Jing'an, People's Square, or closer to the Bund? I do not care about luxury, but I do want a neighborhood that still feels lively after dinner and is practical with luggage.

For a first trip that short, I would pick Jing'an. It is easier to eat well without planning every meal, and you are still only a short metro ride from the Bund when you want the skyline walk.

The Bund area is great for one evening but a little thin as a base if you want casual breakfast spots and neighborhood life. People's Square is practical, but Jing'an feels nicer to come back to at night.

Check whether your hotel is actually close to a useful station exit, not just technically on the map. In Shanghai, ten extra minutes of walking with luggage can feel much longer than it looks online.

If you like wandering, the old lanes around West Nanjing Road and Jing'an are a better use of a short trip than sleeping right next to the tourist postcard view. You can always visit the Bund after dark.
