What is the usual fix when a rental apartment has weak internet in Beijing?

I just moved into a long-term rental in Beijing and discovered the apartment internet is much worse than the agent promised. Video calls are unstable, and the signal falls apart in the bedroom even though the living room is fine.

For people who have dealt with this in China rentals, what is the normal path: ask the landlord to upgrade, switch to a different provider yourself, add a better router mesh setup, or just live with it? I work from home several days a week, so this became urgent fast.

First figure out whether the issue is the building line or just the cheap router the landlord left behind. In a lot of rentals the internet plan is fine and the real problem is one weak router placed in the worst possible corner.

I would start by asking if the account is under China Unicom, China Telecom, or China Mobile and what speed tier it actually is. Many agents just say 'high-speed internet' without knowing anything concrete.

If the connection is good near the main cable entry point, a mesh setup or even one better router may solve most of it immediately. Old apartment walls can kill the signal much harder than people expect.
