Paying vendors at a Kunming market when wallet QR codes fail

I have been buying vegetables and fruit at a neighborhood market in Kunming, and most vendors prefer wallet QR payment. Twice this week my foreign card-linked wallet showed a successful scan screen but would not finish the payment after I entered the amount. The vendor's screen stayed unchanged, so I paid in cash and left a line behind me.

+Is there a reliable way to reduce these payment failures at smaller market stalls? I am not sure whether the issue is foreign card routing, weak signal inside the market, or the type of merchant code being used.

This happens to me mostly with personal collection codes, not larger merchant terminals. Keeping a small cash reserve is still useful at markets. When the vendor has both wallet brands posted, I try the other one before switching to cash because one route may clear while the other stalls.

Signal can matter a lot in covered markets. I now open the wallet app before entering and wait until the balance page fully loads. If the scan hangs, stepping closer to the entrance usually fixes it. It feels awkward, but vendors around my place are used to it and just hold the bag aside.

If you can add a local debit card later, it reduces the number of small payment failures. Until then, avoid paying several stalls in rapid succession with the same foreign card-linked wallet, because risk checks sometimes pause the next tiny transaction for a few minutes.
