Using 支付宝 (Alipay) outside China, or within China as a tourist, is possible without a Chinese bank card, but direct linking of foreign cards has significant limitations. While you can add a Visa, Mastercard, or other international card to your account, these are often not accepted for QR code payments at most local merchants in Mainland China. The most reliable solution for short-term visitors is to use Alipay’s built-in “Tour Pass” feature, a prepaid digital card that you can load with your international bank card.
