The 2026 Lunar New Year has proven to be a landmark season for China’s film industry. According to the latest data released by the China Film Administration, the national box office for the Spring Festival period (February 15–23) reached a staggering 57.52 billion RMB, with over 120 million people heading to theaters to celebrate the holiday.
A Diverse Lineup Led by "Pegasus 3"
This year’s holiday slate offered a wide variety of genres, from high-octane racing dramas to traditional animations. The clear winner of the season was the highly anticipated sequel “Pegasus 3,” which dominated the charts with 29.27 billion RMB in revenue. Other notable performances included:
- “Insects Awaken in Silence”: 8.68 billion RMB
- “Blades of the Guardians: Wind from the Great Desert”: 8.06 billion RMB
- “Boonie Bears: Year After Year”: 7.14 billion RMB
- “Plan Panda: Tribe Adventures”: 1.93 billion RMB
Record-Breaking Screenings and Accessibility
One of the most significant trends this year was the sheer volume of screenings. Data from Maoyan shows that more than 4.34 million screenings were held throughout the holiday, setting a new record for the Spring Festival period. On the first day of the Lunar New Year alone, theaters hosted 595,000 sessions.
Industry analysts attribute this high turnout not only to the quality of the films but also to improved accessibility. The average ticket price for the 2026 Spring Festival was the lowest in six years, making a trip to the cinema a more affordable choice for families and groups of friends.
The Rise of AI in the Cinema Experience
Beyond the numbers, the 2026 season introduced new lifestyle shifts in how audiences interact with film. “AI ticketing” emerged as a popular new method for purchasing seats, reflecting the ongoing digital transformation of daily life in China.
With five films crossing the 100 million RMB milestone during the holiday, the total national box office for 2026 has already climbed to 83.35 billion RMB. This robust start signals a vibrant year ahead for storytellers and moviegoers alike across the country.
