Choosing a Shanghai bank branch for a first local card

I am moving from a payroll card setup to opening my own local debit card in Shanghai, and I am trying to choose the branch before I take a morning off work. My main needs are mobile payment binding, a card that can receive occasional overseas transfers, and staff who are comfortable checking a passport name that is longer than the usual field on some forms.

Two colleagues suggested going to a branch near a large office district rather than the one nearest my apartment. Their point was that the staff there see more foreign passports and know which extra declaration forms are needed. Has anyone found a Shanghai branch where the process was smooth, especially around linking the card to Alipay and WeChat Pay on the same day?

The branch choice matters more than the bank name in my experience. I had a much easier time near Lujiazui than at a small residential branch because the staff already had a checklist for foreign passport holders. Bring your passport, work permit card if you have one, phone number registration details, and your lease or company letter if your address is not obvious.

For payment binding, ask them to keep the English name order consistent with the payment apps. I had one failed Alipay link because the middle name was dropped on the bank side.

I would avoid arriving near closing time. The account opening itself was not hard, but the risk review call took a while and the teller had to confirm how the annual transfer limit should be set. A weekday morning gave them enough time to fix a name spacing issue without asking me to return.

If you expect overseas transfers, ask directly whether they can receive them on that account type. Some basic cards work fine for domestic payments but need an extra foreign exchange step later.

One practical detail: after the card is issued, stay in the branch lobby and bind both payment apps before leaving. If either app rejects the card, the teller can still see the fresh account record and adjust the name or phone field. I left too quickly and spent the next day calling support for a problem that could have been fixed in five minutes.
